Subject: winsock remote control
Is there a such thing as a Winsock compatible program to remotely control
another PC?
Thanks,

Even if you get your SMTP daemon up and running, people might still have
problems mailing to you unless you are connected for at least a few hours
continuously each day. Depending on how often a site tries to send queued
mail, they may miss you all together. And if you decide to not be on for a
couple of days, the mail will bounce (this site for example bounces mail in
the queue after 2 days).
Providers of dial-up IP should really handle your e-mail unless they expect
you to be connected 24-hours a day ...

Actually, I did put my money on the line when I bought this machine. I
don't deny that SCSI is a waste of money and performance if all you are
using it for is disk drives in a DOS/Windows environment. I don't
expect it to outperform an IDE interface in that environment. Quite
the reverse -- IDE has far lower command overhead than SCSI, and a
busmastering SCSI adapter (which I have) has the most overhead of all.
However, my SCSI adapter is controlling two disk drives (with a third
drive, 2.8GB, about to be added), a QIC-150 tape drive, and a CD-ROM
drive, plus the occasional borrowed peripheral that I attach to the
external SCSI connector. Getting all of this to work together in an
IDE system would be quite a challenge. Also, the system was configured
to run Linux efficiently (hence the busmastering SCSI adapter).

That's definitely true. In a DOS/Windows environment, a good PIO SCSI
adapter will run rings around a busmastering controller anyway.

Actually, I believe that the huge performance penalty for that mode
switch was only on a '286. The '286 had no instruction for switching
back into real mode and had to be reset in order to accomplish the
change. In newer processors, the changeover is much less painful,
particularly when considered relative to the other overhead of a disk
I/O operation.
> By the way, busmastering SCSI host adapters cause problems

Yes, but I wouldn't have set up a SCSI-based system had I intended to
use a floppy-port tape drive.

Actually, I have a Buslogic BT747S (EISA). For a DOS/Windows
environment, the fastest SCSI adapter I've seen is a DTC-3280, a PIO
adapter with an ISA bus interface. It's totally useless under Linux,
though, since Data Technology Corp. considers their programming
interface proprietary. So, here it sits in its packing box.

I hate responding to my own posting, but I took 1.0 A back out and I am able
to post -- no parsing of the date header error. Anyone with any inside
knowledge about the program know why this is happening? I'd really rather be
using B.

Subject: [win] a better mousetrap...er...newsreader
Hello again...
QVT/Net's newsreader is okay, and I kinda like it. But the major problem with
it is that it does not thread articles for you. (It will at least maintain a
killfile, though.) So is there anywhere where I can get a threaded newsreader
a la trn for Windows 3.1 running Trumpet Winsock? Or at least a better
newsreader?

In the case of the problems I had, I don't think it was valid. I could always
open one newsgroup with no problems, the error always occured when i tried to
open the next newsgroup no matter what newsgroup it was and if I would exit
from everything and reconnect I could go immediately to the newsgroup that had
caused my system to bomb and open it with no problem but if I tried to open a
second one it would cause the error message and a bomb. Thank goodness this
beta doesn't have that problem.
